Aflasafe GH02 now registered in Ghana to protect maize and groundnuts from deadly aflatoxin

April 10, 2018

We are delighted to announce that Aflasafe GH02 has been registered by Ghana’s Environmental Protection Agency, with an official launch to follow.

Investors Forum participants

To prepare the ground ahead of registration, in mid-August 2017, ATTC hosted an Investors Forum in Ghana. During this forum, it was revealed that studies show aflatoxin contamination in Ghana to be very high, soaring by as much 200 times above the recommended safety limits, especially in groundnuts, while tests in Ghana show very high success in reducing aflatoxin after Aflasafe application.

Following the Investors Forum, reputable companies have expressed interest in distributing and manufacturing Aflasafe in the country.

Now that the product has been registered, the next step will be to finalise the selection of investors. Meantime, on their request, IITA provided technical assistance to some large-scale farmers. All large farms that purchased Aflasafe for piloting were trained first-hand on its use, and provided with technical assistance to directly conduct sampling and testing for aflatoxin at harvest.

In yet more good news, there were positive results at two key levels – product performance and trust. Tests conducted jointly with independent partners revealed aflatoxin reduction of more than 85% in maize from Aflasafe-treated fields compared to control fields. Involving stakeholders in determining aflatoxin content was important, as it enhanced trust on the test results on product performance.

With such credentials, the future looks bright for Ghana’s Aflasafe GH02.
